Summer is finally here, my favorite season. Yes, I am an unabashed fan of summertime and look forward all year to the relaxing warmth, activities and flavors that make summer uniquely delightful. Here are some of the things I’ve got on my list to make the most of this vibrant season, including favorite pastimes, delicious recipes, and refreshing cocktails. I hope you can soak up those summer vibes with these ideas for adventure, entertaining and relaxing this summer.
Summer Reading: Lose Yourself in a Good Book
There’s something magical about diving into a good book under the warm sun (in my case under a wide-brimmed sunhat.) Whether it’s on a hammock in the backyard, by a glistening pool, or on a sunny beach, summer reading is a beloved pastime for me and my family. I recommend making a list of books you’ve been meaning to read or pick up that novel that everyone’s been talking about, such as Kristen Hannah’s The Women. This summer, I have a number of books on my list and one of them is Kairos, which just won the International Booker Prize.
Pot Gardening: A Burst of Life and Color
For those who love flowers but don’t have a lot of space or maybe just a balcony, pot gardening is an extremely rewarding way to garden. It’s perfect for any space, large or small. You can grow a variety of plants, from fragrant herbs to lush greens and bright flowers. Basil, mint, thyme and oregano are perfect for adding fresh flavors to summer dishes, while geraniums and dahlias add color and are so easy to grow. Not a lot of sun on your balcony? Try begonias mixed with ferns and hosta plants for a beautiful combination. Each year, I try new combinations and last year’s favorite was a mixture of Canna and Coleus.
Paddle Boarding: Adventure on the Water
For the more adventurous souls, paddle boarding is a must-try summer activity. It combines the tranquility of being on the water with a fun, full-body workout. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the natural beauty of your surroundings and get some exercise. The peacefulness of gliding over the water is an unbeatable feeling. Plus, if you’re like me, training your ability to balance has become more important as you get older. I highly recommend the inflatable version offered at Costco.
Summer Recipes: Fresh and Flavorful
Summer is the perfect time to experiment with fresh, seasonal ingredients. One favorite recipe is herb pasta with breadcrumbs and Parmesan. This dish is simple yet full of flavor, featuring 1 lb al dente spaghetti tossed with 5 TBS olive oil, a handful of garden-fresh herbs like basil, mint, thyme, chives and parsley, 1 cup crunchy breadcrumbs (homemade makes this dish 100% better,) and 1 cup of Parmesan cheese. It’s the perfect meal for a light summer lunch or a casual dinner alfresco.
The Joy of Summer Cocktails: Sip and Savor
No summer is complete without the refreshing zest of seasonal cocktails. The Aperol Spritz, a favorite for many, encapsulates those summer vibes with its bright orange color and bubbly refreshing taste. Composed of prosecco, Aperol, and a splash of soda water, this cocktail is not only easy to make but also perfect for sipping as the sun sets on a warm evening. Garnish this drink with a fat slice of orange.
